Laboratory for Diagnostics of Hospital Infections and Sterility Control

A Brief Description of the Laboratory

The laboratory carries out analyses of surveillance cultures for detecting carriers of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcous aureus (MRSA) strains by conventional culture detection method using chromogenic media and antibiotic susceptibility testing, which is the only suitable method for evaluating effective decolonization. Since 2007, a molecular method real time PCR is available for detecting MRSA carriers directly from cultures. The PCR method is used also for detecting the presence of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) in S. auerus isolates. Molecular typing methods are applied for determining the relationship of S. auerus isolates, which facilitates investigations of outbreaks. The laboratory is contributing to joint efforts to reduce the MRSA infection rates by keeping the clients abreast of new colonized patients and by introducing new methodologies applied for confirmation and molecular determination of MRSA isolates. Therefore, sanitary and bacteriological examinations of samples collected from the hospital environment and staff are regularly performed. The samples are collected if so indicated by epidemiological signs or occasionally for educational or other purposes. They are regularly collected only for obvious or urgent reasons. Close cooperation with hygiene and epidemiology units at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, and at other medical institutions is of key importance for the success at laboratory work. In 2005, Sterility Control Unit, which performs investigations of sterility of solutions, various liquids, growth media, surgical specimens, biological material intended for transplantation, haematopoietic stem cells, joined the laboratory. The control of sterilization procedures is performed with biological indicators.
