Laboratory for Diagnostics of Fungal Infections

A Brief Description of the Laboratory

The Laboratory for Diagnostics of Fungal Infections performs the investigations needed in the microbiological diagnostics of fungal diseases. These include the procedures that allow isolation and identification of causing agents, be it systemic or superficial and localized infections. The laboratory carries out assessment of the sensitivity to antimycotics, particularly of the isolates obtained from sterile cultures. If need be, typing of isolates is done. The laboratory staff works in close cooperation with clinicians, who are facing directly clinical situations, usually seriously ill complex patients. The staff helps the clinicians with suggestions how to collect and transport clinical samples and with interpretation of test results. The staff also cooperates with the Laboratory for Humoral Immunity and Serology Diagnostics of Fungal Diseases which is also incorporated in the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology and is in charge for detecting the presence of antigens ant antibodies that are crucial for the diagnostics of fungal infections.

Beside standard microbiological investigations, the laboratory executes and develops the molecular diagnostic procedures applied in isolation and identification of causative agents, thereby keeping step with other reference laboratories in the detection of the most rare agents of fungal infections.

Less extensive though not insignificant part of the work is dedicated to hospital environment control. The laboratory staff is undertaking indoor air sampling in hospitals and quantitatively evaluating the presence of fungi identified by using morphological and molecular techniques.
