Laboratory for Diagnostics of Atypical Bacteria Infections

A Brief Description of the Laboratory

The work of the laboratory is focused on microbiological diagnostics of infections caused by atypical bacteria, such as Chlamydia, Mycoplasma and Legionella. The cultures for examination are collected from the upper and lower respiratory tract, conjunctiva, genitourinary system, tissues and body fluids. The infections with the above bacteria are confirmed by using standard and most updated techniques: isolation of bacteria, antigen detection by immunofluorescence and enzyme immunoassays, antibody immune response evaluation by serological tests. The major concern remains molecular diagnostics of infections caused by atypical bacteria and on-going development of new methodologies. The laboratory performs genotyping of legionella, isolated from the cultures collected from infected patients and from water, which is of chief importance in the assays to prove the concordance of clinical and environmental strains and thereby to identify the source of the patient’s infection. The laboratory has been chosen as reference laboratory for the diagnostics of legionellosis in Slovenia and is member of European Legionnares’ Disease Surveillance Network (ELDSNet) which is coordinated by ECDC.

The laboratory participates in a variety of programs for international external quality assessment of molecular and serological diagnostics of Chlamydia, Mycoplasma and Legionella: External Quality Assessment (QCMD, Glasgow), National External Quality Assessment Service (UK NEQAS, London), European Working Group for Legionella Infections (EWGLI, London) and in the program scheme of External Quality Assessment Services – EQAS (LabQuality, Helsinki).

The laboratory is engaged in research, too. Investigations of atypical bacteria are carried out on molecular and epidemiological level. This involves typing of bacteria, discovering the diversity of bacterial genetic profiles, detecting mutations that are vital for developing antibiotic resistance and examining their virulence factors.

The laboratory is included in education programs; the students and residents have access to the laboratory where they can get acquainted with microbiological diagnostics of infections caused by atypical bacteria and prepare their seminar papers and research assignments.
