Laboratory for Hemocultures and Other Urgent Microbiological Investigations

A Brief Description of the Laboratory

Technical activities of the laboratory include standard bacteriological diagnostics of sepsis (using hemocultures), bacterial meningitis, infections of catheters and drains, investigations of sterile body fluids, tissues and other samples. Approximately 23,000 – 24,000 hemocultures and 8,000 – 9,000 other samples are tested yearly by the laboratory. For the detection of bacteria, rapid methods are used, such as direct Gram’s stains of various cultures and bacterial isolation methods. The most common hemoculture isolates are Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia, and other. In order to demonstrate some of the causative agents of bacterial meningitis and sepsis, standard methods are combined with molecular ones. Isolated bacteria are identified by using standard, commercial and molecular identification systems. Determination of bacterial sensitivity is made according to CSLI standard (Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute). Constant contacts with the departments of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana ensure that the transfer and interpretation of key tests results on causative agents and on their sensitivity in patients with sepsis are running smoothly and quickly. Furthermore, constant contacts with the Department of Infection Control at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana ensure quick exchange of information on resistant bacteria carriers. The bacteria are typed with molecular epidemiology typing methods.
