Laboratory for Parasitology

A Brief Description of the Laboratory

Laboratory for Parasitology has several missions, the basic being diagnostics. The laboratory performs diagnostics of Toxoplasma gondii. As a reference laboratory furnished with superb equipment, the laboratory is capable to solve any problem associated with Toxoplasma gondii infection. Another field of interest is infections with intestinal parasites. The diagnostics of these infections is performed by using most advanced techniques that have been introduced into practice by the laboratory staff itself or in cooperation with the teams of foreign reference centers. This is also the only laboratory in Slovenia which performs serological diagnostics of infections with all other parasites. Although Pneumocystis jirovecii belongs to fungi, the laboratory can provide the most up-to-date methods for clinicians to help them diagnose a suspected infection with Pneumocystis jirovecii. Additional field of interest, which is still being developed, is diagnostics of malaria. The laboratory is the only one in Slovenia and further afield to provide diagnostics of malaria 24-hours a day. The laboratory produces smears and performs rapid antigen tests and PCR.

The laboratory is also an education and training unit. The staff is ready to share their knowledge and experience with anyone who is interested in medical parasitology.

Furthermore, the laboratory is engaged in research. The laboratory team is aiming to elaborate a protocol that would facilitate rapid diagnostics of Toxoplasma gondii infections in pregnant women. The team is developing molecular methods that would help to detect minor quantities of parasites in patients. The laboratory is also experienced in detecting parasites, in particular Guardia intestinalis and Cryptosporidium spp., in drinking water. Besides, the laboratory is endeavoring to use PCR in the diagnostics of malaria and of Entamoeba histolytica/dispar infection as laboratory routine method.
