Laboratory for Diagnostics of Respiratory Infections

A Brief Description of the Laboratory

The laboratory performs complete diagnostics of respiratory and oral infections.

The main respiratory pathogens, such as Streptococcus pneumonia, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and causative agents of hospital-acquired respiratory infections, such as Staphylococcus aureus, enterobacteria, non-fermentative gram negative bacteria, and others are identified from the samples collected from the lower respiratory system, whose condition is being examined by using Gram stained smears. Meanwhile, the laboratory controls the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria and investigates the mechanisms of their resistance.

The laboratory also detects colonization and infection of the respiratory tract in patients with cystic fibrosis and performs diagnostics of pertussis (whooping cough) by using the most advanced techniques. Specifically for the needs of respiratory infections diagnostics in the patients with cystic fibrosis, the laboratory performs identification of bacterial species from Burkholderia cepacia complex and of phenotypically atypical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, the laboratory carries out the typing of P. aeruginosa isolates by using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).

In the laboratory, the presence of periodontopathogenic bacteria (Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Tannerella forsythia and Trepomena denticola) in the samples collected form periodontal pockets is identifed by using polymerase chain reaction.

The laboratory has been participating in various international multicentric research studies for monitoring antibiotic sensitivity of bacteria (T.E.S.T. and SENTRY) and for testing the most appropriate rapid diagnostic methods used in the detection of colonization/infection with multiresistant bacteria (MOSAR, SATURN).
