Bacterial and Fungal Resistance Monitoring

A Brief Description of the Unit

The unit monitors the susceptibility of bacteria and fungi to antimicrobial drugs and prevalence of multi-drug resistant bacteria S. aureus – MRSA, vancomycin resistant E. faecalis and E. faecium, ESBL or carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae, P. aueruginosa and A. baumannii in Central Slovenian Region. Quarterly and yearly reports on the sensitivity of bacteria and fungi to antimicrobial drugs are produced for the University Medical Centre Ljubljana and yearly reports for the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana and Trbovlje General Hospital. Regular weekly analyses of incidence of critical multidrug resistant bacteria for the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology are also performed. The unit cooperates with hospital infection control units in monitoring multi-drug resistant bacteria and analysing outbreaks of multi-drug resistant bacteria. It also contributes data to EARS-Net Slovenia.

Phenotypic and molecular detection of carbapenemases in Gram-negative bacteria as well as determination of epidemiological relationship of isolates in suspected outbreaks is performed in cooperation with our Laboratory for Molecular Bacteriology and Mycology for Institute of Microbiology and of other clients.
