Laboratory for Diagnostics of Zoonoses and WHO Centre

A Brief Description of the Laboratory

The laboratory was founded in 2003. Its work is primarily focused on identification of viral and bacterial zoonotic agents by using classical diagnostic techniques as well as novel molecular methods that are being steadily introduced into routine diagnostics. The laboratory provides comprehensive direct and indirect diagnostics of microorganisms, in particular of those that are transmitted by various vectors in natural environments. The World Health Organization (WHO) has selected the laboratory to become its Reference Center which, owing to its successful work, has become a part of the WHO global network ″Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network″. Hence, the laboratory has assumed the tasks of Reference Laboratory for arboviruses and viral hemorrhagic fever in Slovenia and Balkan countries. Due to the specificity of its work, the laboratory was included in to European network that keeps control over imported dangerous viral diseases "European Network of Imported Viral Diseases″. In 2003, a competent service of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia authorized the laboratory to perform diagnostics and research of extremely dangerous microorganism, including bioterrorism agents.

The work of the laboratory is mainly dedicated to research, specifically to the study of molecular epidemiology and ecology of vector-transmitted microorganisms and to the study of viral hemorrhagic fevers pathogenesis.
