Professor Srečko Koren was born in Maribor, on 8August 1950. He graduated at the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana in 1974. In 1977, he earned Master’s Degree from the same faculty. In 1980, he completed specialization in microbiology with parasitology. In 1986, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana.

In 1975, he was employed by the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine of Ljubljana. In the years 1984-1986 and 1990-1992 he worked in research at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galvestone, Texas, USA. He has been Head of the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology since his nomination in 1993. In 1998, he was elected Full Professor in Microbiology and Immunology. In his research work, he is focused on the study of tumor virology, intereferonology, and chronobiology. His bibliography comprises 132 bibliography units of which 17 are original papers published in academic journals using the SCI and 22 papers published in international and local scientific and research journals.
