A One-Term Postgraduate Course on Hospital Hygiene

Hospital hygiene course is aimed at two groups of health care workers: medical doctors who are interested in hospital hygiene/infection control (the course is obligatory for clinical microbiologists and infectious disease doctors in training) and registered nurses, physical therapists and sanitary engineers that specialize in hospital hygiene/infection control. The course takes place every years and alternates between course for medical doctors and registered nurses (and other health care workers).

The course is organized by Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, with cooperation from regional tertiary teaching hospital University Medical Centre Ljubljana.

Description of course learning outcomes:

  • The legal aspect and regulations regarding infection control and hospital hygiene.
  • Quality and risk management, audits of professional practices and evaluation of performance, infection control training of employees as well as contribution to research.
  • Identification, investigation and management of outbreaks.
  • Infection control activities such as infection control interventions, implementation of infection control healthcare procedures, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, surveillance of multi-drug resistant organism in hospitals and contribution to reducing antimicrobial resistance, advice and recommendation of appropriate laboratory testing (surveillance samples etc.) and use of laboratory data, decontamination and sterilization of medical devices and controlling of environmental sources of infections
  • Occupational health activities such as recommended immunizations for health-care workers, appropriate management of occupational blood and infectious fluid exposure

The course has 85 hours of direct teaching courses, 15 hours of practical demonstrations, and 30 hours for seminars; it is divided into 4 modules (1 week per month, February – May), each week students have theoretical part and corresponding practical demonstrations.

Corse participant must be present during lectures and practical demonstrations. The course concludes with formal exam.
